~ Puya alpestris - The Emerald of Bromeliads ~

This is one of my favourite plants in my garden. It is a bromeliad called Puya alpestris, originating from the Chilean Andes where it grows in an arid climate.
The plant I have is only a few years old and not yet of flowering age.

I took this photo a few years ago in Christchurch Botanic gardens where there are a few well established Puya bromeliad specimens; all producing several tall flower spikes reaching 5 feet in height. They are quite spectacular and eye-catching from their amazing colour, quantity and all on a tall spear.

The Puya alpestris, one of several species of Puya from South America, develops large spiny rosettes of spiny leaves from which develop the tall spikes of blue-turquoise flowers.

Check out my workshop photo for a better idea of what the full flower spike looks like. It’s very unusual yet stunningly attractive.

Thanks for viewing.

For my post I did the following from my original:

1. Crop and resize.
2. Desaturate and save as BG.
3. Cropped, adjusted contrast and layred each flower onto the BG.
4. Added border and saved.
