In Nov 2001, among the many news articles arriving here to the tranquil American families, I noticed a Reuters’ article describing a 16-year-old Afghani girl who returned to work at the bomb-damaged Kabul TV Station.
“Wearing a stylish brown and cream headscarf, Mariam Shakebar welcomed back the capital's viewers and outlined the evening's entertainment of a reading from the Koran followed by music, cartoons, interviews and news in Dari and Pashto.” … “Television was banned under the Taliban's hardline Islamic regime, and women were forbidden from working. Shakebar, then an 11-year-old presenter of children's programmes, lost her job."(Reuters, Nov 17)
With that information, I wrote her a brief letter in English, addressed to “Kabul TV Station, Afghanistan”. After sending the letter, I never heard anything more about Mariam Shakebar. Then on 7-10-2002, I received the reply from her.
My response went out next day, asking her how can my wife and I send some money to help her and her family. Then all effort fell dead. No echo since then.

I am posting this picture asking for your kind help...
I already contacted Afghani Embassy in Washington DC but they told me "helping an individual is not their duty". I wrote to The Honorable Abdullah Abdullah — Minister of Foreign Affairs in Kabul — without success...
If any of you who happened to read this appeal, and are in the situation of able to bring Shakeba back to our normal contact, please be kind to help. Your humanitarian assistance are fully welcome and appreciated.
Sincerely,
