I just moved back the black cursor to increase deep black area without affecting the rest of the image.

Hello Julie,
This was just a very quick exercise and one could do much better with taking more time. The lamp pot was cloned out and evidence of cloning was smudged over to make it blend in some more. Hope it is acceptable to you.

Bonjour Raimundo,

See my other WS for final result, here I am just talking about the level adjustment.

Curve in the histogram should normally cover the full width. Total width has 256 different value, in your case here we can see that your curve covers only half of the histogram width. Left is pure black, right is pure white and middle is medium gray, most of the tone of your white flower are located between medium gray and pure black. It means underexposure.

To correct this in post processing, though it is better to shoot with a centered historgram, you can displace the cursor at the bottom of the histogram.

For standard regular subject, I normally move the righ cursor (highlight cursor) to the right end of the base of the histogram. And I do the same with the left side too. But since the flower is bright white and it occupy a very large amount of your image surface, I didn't really reach the base of the curve. If I had done so, the flower would have become washed out. By stoping before, I ensure I will keep some nice detail and texture into the white petals. (red Arrow 1)

Once I have done that, then I moved the middle cursor left and right until I got a nice overall exposure and density. (Green Arrow, 2)

Level adjustmennt is always one of the first PP adjustment I do.

I suggest you take your own image and try it by yourself, good luck.

Alain

Hi Raimundo,

Here is my WS with explanation.

First thing i did, was to adjust the light level in the histogram to bring back some brightness in the white flower. It also brought back some nice bokeh detail in the BG, but it is also possible to leave it darker. See my second WS to see how I adjusted the LEVEL values.

Second adjustment I made was to neutralize the white balance. In a scene were a subject is surronded by a dominant color (green here) the subject receive a lot of green reflected light and consequent get a green cast. With a white balance tool and an eye dropper tool it was easy to neutralize the green cast.

Finally, I cheated a bit by localy applying on the pistil only a high pass filter to sharpen this important area, pistil to a flower are like eyes to face. If they are not sharp, picture lack of "punch".
