[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

Encountered this thirsty elephant on an island in the river Chobe, between Namibia and Botswana. It was a herd of twelve elephants which were grazing and drinking an awesome view. Took this shot from a little boat which was later attacked by an angry hippo.

Shot with my Sigma 70-300 zoom, with a high ISO of 640 ASA, 1/500 shutter speed to prevent motion blur. The sky was overcast and it was shot an hour before sunset. Unfortunately the f/4.5 aperture isn't the most ideal one, but the picture appeared acceptable for me.

PP work: shot in RAW, adjusted brightness and clarity, converted to jpeg and adjusted levels and curves. Used USM and resized for TL used USM again with different setting add frame.

Nice shot Hans - well into the rainy season looking at the length of the ele grass!!

Clear and sharp and with a little motion in the water that is nice.. Been a long time since I travelled along the Chobe (at very low level and high speed in a Piper Aztec)

Bonjour Hans.
Belle image naturaliste avec un bon mouvement de l’éléphant en train de boire.
Les couleurs naturelles sont parfaitement bien adaptées à cette photo.
Bonne journée.

Hi Hans,
A very sharp capture of this cute elephant playing with water!
Great timing and good shutter speed to freeze this twirl effect of the water from its trunk!
Great details on the skin of the elephant!
Wel seen and neatly presented.
Best regards,

Francis Xavier

Hoi Hans,

Good Morning Hans,

Oh, this is great!
The movement is such a wonerful aspect of the shot.
I can imagine the excitement, as you tried to steady yourself in the boat, at seeing this fine animal so close.
The elephant is sharp and the textures of its hide are clearly captured.
For me, the composition is just right.

Looking forward to more fine shots.
Best wishes,
Bev :-)

Hi Hans,

seems like forever since i visited your gallery, and as usual, i've not been disappointed with what i see.
Not sure i can agree with your own statement about the aperture here. Seems a perfect choice to me.
Nice detail in the creases of the skin, and a good composition..
I also like the warming colour temperature of the setting sun just beginning to cast the orange and pinks into the clouds.

I must admit though,,,,that grass on the flank....Aagggh. I had to get rid of it, so did a workshop. Hope you don't feel bad about it.

As usual, actual quality of picture in WS is no where near as good as the original due to re-sizing, but you can see what i've tried to do.
Nice shot, looking forward to more,

Hi Hans,
WoW! What a great caught of view and wandeful action shot of this elephant,
wanderful picture and great colors and light.
Chapeau...Very well done...

Hello Hans,

I was wondering where you were travelling these days.

I like a lot the expression and eye-contact between you and your subject.I am positive he will remember you if you see him again on a future trip down there (^_^).

Seriously , the weather conditions were not ideal, and did not help you. I would have prefered a faster shutter speed to have the water clear. But I still like a lot this one. Details of the elephant are superb. Thight crop working very well too. Bravo.

WOW great capture nice timing and details

Superb catch Hans , the elephant seems to be engulfed by the tall grass which contrasts well with his hard skin texture litterally , he was there for a drink !! Another good one from a packed to the brim with animals country, specially Chobe, you did ok with the noise at iso 640 nonetheless , looks fine enough to me,
thanks for sharing ,

hi hans
excellent nature shot, very good detail in the elephant, well caught with the water and a nice touch of greenery.

Hello Hans, a wonderful shot of this thirsty elephant. You timed it beautifully with the movement of water being drawn up by its' trunk.
The sharpness is excellent.
Good contrasts between the leathery skin of the animal and the soft fluffy grasses in the bg.
You were very lucky to be able to capture this, but I am not too sure about the boat being attacked by a hippo!
Tfs, regards Jean.
