Elephants at the Chobe river

During my game sail on the Chobe river near Kasane on the border of Botswana and Namibia, I observed this herd of Elephants with their offspring.

Took this picture about forty minutes before sunset, so the light circumstances were not that good.
Used the Nikon D70s with 70-300mm Sigma lens and a setting with 400ASA. The Raw image appeared to be a nightmare, water vapour must have entered the camera and tiny water droplets were visible, particular in the left upper corner.
So I did quite some "cleaning labor" before it was as it is now. Luckily my camera didn't suffer from any mechanical or electronic failures.

PP work: Used the clone and blur tool to get rid of many nasty "rings" created by the droplets. I
n the end I saved a large copy in tiff after some PP work in CS3.
Opened again the image and converted to .jpeg adjusted levels and curves, brightness and contrast and increased the saturation a bit.
Resized and used USM to sharpen, finally add frame.

N.B. Meanwhile I have cleaned my D70s sensor, but many images suffer of the droplets, so have some work to do. Luckily I made the majority of my Africa pictures with my Nikon D300 camera.

Hi Hans

Good symmetrical reflections of the elephants with excellent sharpness, color & spacing between them. Tfs!

Bonjour Hans

Cette photo animalière est une véritable merveille!!
Les couleurs sont remarquables avec de superbes reflets!!
Ce doit être un grand moment d'observer ce groupe d'éléphants dans leur élément naturel...
Bravo Hans et merci pour le partage!
Catherine

What a photo opportunity! And very well taken. This must have been a stunning moment. I can see traces of the water droplets but really they're not so bad, and certainly not enough to take anything away from the magic of this scene!

Hi Hans,
A fine panoramic format for this artistic presentation of such a Nature shot!
Nice group of elephants enjoying the grass by the river with a fabulous reflection.
I admire the good lighting on the animals and the lovely pastel colored sky.
Sharpness is impeccable and the reflection is an impact to this marvellous composition.
Great work, my friend.
Regards,

Francis Xavier

Hello Hans,
My "kingdom" to live such a moment !! Very nice composition and choice of the format for three views in one : the sky, the elephants in the grass and the reflection of the scene in the water. TFS
Kind regards
Jean

Hallo Hans,
More beautifully one cannot photograph a picture. That is a wonderful composition. That is a mad perspective, which correctly manufactures the feeling of depth Very beautifully POV. Well compound and perfectly. Very well made.
Best regards.
Janusz

Hello Hans,

Good job in removing the rings as the sky looks great and noisefree. I could only dream about visiting this place. A great safari photo. Regards

Danilo

Hans.. this is wonderful. I really like the reflection in the water. The dividing lines of elephants, green, and water, all combine to make an interesting photo. Very nicely done! Lisa

hi hans
lovely shot of these elephants, nice capture on the river side good reflections, good rich colours in the vegatation, seems by the height of the grass it could cover an elephant, nice subtle coloured sky.

What a great shot Hans! So sorry about the droplets on your sensor, or lens! But you salvaged it well. A beautiful scene, so nice they all posed for you!

Hello Hans! Can't be better than this! A perfect sky, beautiful layers of water, reflections, grass and clouds. A peaceful scene but very impressive. Shot with great skill and technique. Your pp work saved that fantastic image! Well done!
