[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Malagasy people eat rice three times a day -- at least. Madagascar is almost self sufficient and has to import very little rice. The bright green patch of rice in the foreground is a patch of Baby Rice. Once it grows a bit more it is replanted into a different patch but spaced apart so that the plant can grow more.

The hill in the background is an exposed granitic intrusion, like you often find in the center of continents. (For Canadians this would be equivelant to the Canadian Shield in Ontario and Quebec for instance.)

Also, you can see the clear cutting on the mountainside. Malagasy clear cut in order to make room for more terraced rice fields as well as to harvest wood to make charcoal out of. Clear cutting can not last for ever.

The wide angle lens was invaluable on this trip.

I like this one, Karin. A nice range of tones from the sunny fields in the foreground to the cloudy hills in the distance. Funny combination here for me - the paddy fields remind me of places in Asia (Indonesia) and the hills almost have a "Scottish" feel to them. Nice photo.

ciao Ms Karin !

Hi Karen,
Very beautiful landscape so luminous despite the cloudy sky! With their different colors, the fields look like a creative patchwork! The mountains are interesting too, with their peeled slopes alternating with the wooded ones. Very well done! Annie

Salaam Karin,

Hello Karin
That photo is just like a colorful quilt. I like the different colors and shapes of those rice patches. That wide angle lens works perfectly an the depth of field here is beautiful, everything is sharp from foreground to background. The high horizon, the blue sky and the point of view you selected make a very good composiion. That note is also very interesting.
Bravo
Serge

Hi,

Thanks for the notes. We used to have this practice of planting rice in the phil. till to date. Thanks for reminiscing me. I like this landscape esp. the lights and the details are great. It will be more interesting if you captured full the patch in the front. Well seen.

Hi Karin,
What a spetacular landscape. Amazing how each square/block is a different colour. The hills and the clouds are an added bonus. Beautifully composed.
