...is the name of a Paul Bowles book. I read it many years ago but it make me keep for always a very " romantic" idea from Morocco, also because at that time I have seen a documentary of Bowles life. At certain point he decided to come to Tanger and lived there for several years until the end. Later, I have seen Bertolucci movie but the book was much more interesting. Bowles wrote and spoke about life, travels, death, important things that every man think about but not so easy to tell about with people we meet in daily life....I think it makes me believe that Morocco had a certain magie to give...and there is a magie but not so " romantic" as my spirit has created. This is a Marrakesh known "Place", an incredible place. Colors and smells "eat" us and we became part of all those people stand over there filling all that " Place" Incredible moment the sunset when sellers of everything come to the "Place" between turists and local people. It is a "concert" of life with an amazing light, and full of dinamism and sounds. We meet ourselves lost in that meeting with everyone, and specialy ,with us. Our limits are tested. The smoke you see in the background comes from the food market of the Place. The light gives tonalities to walls and to people difficult to forget. For me, it has been a journey where " sheltering Sky " words came to my mind and Paul Bowles has been always there with me. Some years ago he has said:
“I've always wanted to get as far as possible from the place where I was born. Far both geographically and spiritually. To leave it behind ... I feel that life is very short and the world is there to see and one should know as much about it as possible. One belongs to the whole world, not just one part of it.”
I must tell you that I have felt that abroad appeal in life but there is a serenity and a safety feeling about the Land where we have grown-up that became bigger to me with the age. There are places that make us think about so many things, they wake all emotions and are a perfect stages for taking photos that mean much to us than just images. By the way as you know Morocco is so close to Portugal but my journey has been very far away.

T.

PS I forget to speak about shopping...but here in, Jemaa el Fna. we can buy dreams written in the cards that old women read, Serpents dancing for you, people that let you take a photo for money, great food for eaten, collars, leather,... so many things...and the music always in background. We hear Africa.

Hi Teresat,
A good one. I was here in the Summer of 2011. Marrakech to me is one of the most exotic places on this planet. You capture the hustle of the market very well.

Great shot full of activity and summing up exactly your thoughts on Marrakesh. It is one place I have always wanted to go and hope I will do some time in the future and I imagine you have captured the essence of the square here, with the light, colours, and activity of the people, as well as the smoke. Wonderful daily life shot full of atmosphere and a great addition to the theme.

Hi Teresa

The hustle and bustle of market day, so many people looking for a bargin. I love the way the smoke filters across the backdrop the way it does, it mixes and changes the view and perspectives. Amoungst all the mayhem of people going about their daily business, I see a chink of humour in one corner of this eastern scene.....a large blow-up telephone, it loooks out of place but then it does show the changing times we are in.

I would long to travel to so many eastern contries to experience the cultures, alas so much unrest in many places does tend to strike home the many problems that do exist.....perhaps one day, at least i'd like to think one day I will be able to.

Wonderous scene Teresa, perfect addition the the theme this week, the red flag grabs a lot of the attention, have a peaceful weekend.

stv ;o))

Ciao Teresas, fascinating composition with a lot of people, great market scene, splendid light and wonderful colors, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Teresa,
A splendid ambient in this rather busy open air market place with the BG smoke nicely lit with backlighting. So many things of interest in this daily life shot.
Very neatly presented and a fine documentation photojournalistic shot.

Hi Therese, I love the picture and I love your note as well - you take the words out of my mouth and mind. - I was there a few times about 40 yrs ago when tourists were not that many around. It sure is one of my fondest memory beside my love Australia.

Thanks for sharing and certainly suits the contribution very fine.
kindest regards Monika

Hello Teresat

I like the of mass humanity. Shopping at it's best. I like the part of your image that shaows the people on the top of the building on the left. It really enhances the over all impact. nice

Dear Teresa,

The scene you've presented is sereal, just like a scene from Arabian nights. People busy shopping in open market is looking interesting. A blow of smoke coming from the side is adding charm. Such a wonderful photograph, well done. Thanks for sharing.

Kind Regards,
Inaam

I like the immense mood you have captured in this strong picture, Teresa!

The smoke erupting out adds great drama into the scene, whereas light and exposure are brilliant.
Good sharpness and nice clarity with amazing details.
Nice contribution to Friday's theme!

Have a nice weekend.

Paras

Amazing crowd of people, great atmpsphere of an oriental market, I like this POV and the light

Now, this is what I call shopping! There must thousands shoppers! And we do tend to stereotype people or places and when I think of Morocco I only think of the places based on the movies I've seen but I'm sure it's not romantic for those people. Love the lighting and the effect of the smoke. Great pov and dof with nice details. Very well done, tfs.

Hello, this image of peaceful overcrowding is simply superb. The exposure from light to dark is very well done and gives the picture strong human interest.Fine atmosphere created by the light. Best wishes,Otto.

Your shot seems to capture the essence of Morocco very nicely with the crowds and the different architecture. Light is well handled as you appear to be shooting into the sun but you have captured the details well and avoided the glare of the sun.
regards
David

Hi Teresa,
A richly detailed image of this open shopping market with ideal overall light.Higher vantage point has also incorporated the buildings showing their importance to this scene, well seen and TFS.

Bonjour Teresa

Hi Teresat,

A good contribution to the Friday's theme with the crowd at the Marrakech market. Your point of view is showing the activities at the market. A good management of the light which does not hurt the output of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Teresat...nice shot...great tones and colors with excellent light. Well done.

Roger

There is so much to see in this scene Teresa , a busy image ! Evidently everything goes in Marrakesh , lively place it surely is and i second your thoughts about it being a " concert of life " like first row seats attending a rock concert !
I like your pov here where the massive crowd litterally covers up almost every meter of possible ground , the smoke dramatizes the scene , thank God it comes from the food kiosks... i could go on and on describing and ..not exagerating the human chaos in that photograph yet the ultimate experience is to live through it : you did it !
Thank you my friend for this photo submitted to the shopping theme , bravo , a good one , ok show us some more of your trip .
Um abraço,
Carol

I really like the light in the steam! That adds so much to the shot, breaking up all the people and the tiny details in the scene! It pulls your eyes right there to the light! I truly like the RED flag!

Bom dia Teresa,
Parece que todo mundo veio para o shopping. Você fez uma bela colheita desse mundo incomum que é o Marroco. A pesar disso é uma foto sua que bem reflete a sua visão do mundo e seu modo de capturá-lo.

A wonderful view of this well known place : the noisy atmosphere with the steam, some details like these on the building, the light on the left one and of course the red flag !
Kind regards
Jean

Hello Teresat,
