Wacky Googles

Although no fan of pet-snaps I did like this picture of the enjoyable doggie.

While relaxing in the garden of my guest farm in Namibia the Jack Russell of the owner kept me company while I was playing with my camera. Took several shots from Googles while I was "flat" on my belly. Chose a relative small f-stop (f/5.6) to create a blurred background and used fill flash to create a catch light in his eyes.

N.B. I asked the owner why he called his dog "Googles"? He replied it was not his original name. As pup he was called "Goebbels" after the Nazi Joseph Goebbles, apparently he expected that the dog would have a big mouth, barking only nonsense. But he changed the name in "Googles", several German guest were upset about the name :-)

PP work. Shot in Raw, converted to jpeg adjusted levels and curves, cropped, selected the dark areas to brighten it a bit. Adjusted brightness and contrast, resized, sharpened using USM and add frame.

Hi Hans,
Lovely pet portrait, I am no fan of pet snaps either but this is a great shot. Nice low PoV, lovely and sharp with great colour and detail. The DoF is also spot ton in this shot to. Best wishes

Yeah this is a good one! Great POV, great use of flash (and a terrific balance between lit subject and background) and excellent use of the DOF.

Great job!

Hi Hans,
I like this worm's eye view shot of this cute dog in accurate sharpness!
Very nice reflection in the eye and on the nose.
Quite a considerable DOF.
Details are perfect!
Well done.

Hahaha this is cool Hans

The Ground level POV is fabulous, Using the fill flash was a great idea which made it pretty eye catching :)

I however, kept the smaller aperture to render details in the b/g too :) (personal choice may be)

Have a look at this one u might pretty like it too :)

Cheers and a nice contribution to the Theme :)

Hey Hansie - I think a better image for the Whacky and Zany theme would be of you lying on your stomach taking this Google dog's photo... He he he
But it is a superb shot of the dog - so crisp and sharp - I can't fault it (even though it was taken with a n*k*n...) But I still think a pic of you would have been better...

Very nice portrait.Beautiful pose colors and details.
Regards Zoran

Pet snaps, such as these are wonderful! The low profile is awesome Hansie, do I imagine that you were down on the ground on your belly?? Or did you just set the camera on the ground! This is so nice, super sharp, nice posting!

Great story about the name.. JRs are great dogs.. A small dog that thinks and acts like a big dog!!

Great low POV - all too often people shoot animals from the usual human eye level, looking down at the 4 legged friends which is a poor perspective. This is a great example of how to do it properly! Nice choice of f stop to control the focal field.

Hello Hans,

This is an excellent shot of Googles, taken from a most engaging angle and the use of the flash was a master stroke.
I do think a shot of you, achieving this fine portrait, would have been just about as whacky as a shot could be!!!

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hello dear Hans!

This is a perfect shot in beautiful focus and great sharpness. Very beautiful colors and lovely contrasts with beautiful light and exposure. A lovely bokeh in BG with a good bokeh.

TFS, indeed a beautiful shot!

Best Regards,

Hi Hans,
This shot belongs in a pet magazine, it truly is flawless. Perfect focus and DOF, brilliant use of the flash too. Well worth getting down and dirty for. Bravo.
