Pompeii's Amphitheater was built about 70-80 BC and is the oldest yet discovered. Smaller than the more famous version in Rome, this oval-shaped arena had no underground facilities but did have a similar canopy system for shielding spectators from the elements. Close by is a huge square (palaestra) with three-sided portico that was used for exercise and sports exhibitions. Just as in Rome, this amphitheater's purpose was hosting "man vs beast" contests and gladiatorial battles - one creating so many casualties from a riot among fiercely competitive spectators (soccer game, maybe?) that activities here were banned until everyone settled down.

This corridor runs around the inside perrimeter of the arena, the lighting caught my eye that day.

Bom dia Steve,
Good title for this misterious caught. I like the play Light/shadows and very nice POV/DOF. Interesting almost the very adequate framing.

Hi Steve,

surely Pompeii offers many interesting cues for making photos and i see that you used them to the full. Thanks to the POV that you have chosen the composition is excellent and there is a nice play of light and shade. In addition, the sequence of arches gives depth to the image.Light is well managed.Sharpness is apt for an image like this.

Hello Steve, thanks for your comments on my pictures.
I can understand why you would want to take shots here. The light is really well managed. The dark interior with just a little light highlighting the arches is an excellent shot imo.
I like the title, who knows who is round the next corner?
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Steve,
A very interesting composition. It is moody because you know what happened here, it is mysterious because you want to know what is behind that curve. really good capture of light.

Hello Steve,

It is a composition with warm colors and a touch of mystery. The curve under the arches brings deepness. I like the play of light and shadow.

Hi Steve

January 18 I would have been in Guangzhou / Kaiping so missed this superb upload. Good sharpness & the arch frames the bg well. The dark sombre tones add mystery & mood. Tfs!
