The Pub

This is the bar where the British actor Oliver Reed suffered a heart attack and subsequently died during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta on 2 May 1999. He was 61 years old. He was reported to have been heavily intoxicated at the time of his death having allegedly drunk large quantities of rum, beer and whisky with his wife and friends. He is also said to have beaten a number of much younger men, Royal Navy sailors, at arm wrestling during his last visit to “The Pub”, an English style bar in Archbishop Street, Valletta. Several of his scenes in Gladiator had to be completed using CGI techniques. He was buried at his home town, in County Cork, Ireland.

I can’t pretend that he was my type of man, or that, save perhaps for his role in Gladiator and one or two other movies, I particularly admired his performances. But he did interest me, both as an actor and as a personality and I was saddened to hear of his death.

“The Pub” is run by English people, they are very friendly and serve an excellent pint of Guinness!

Thanks to Wikipedia and "The Pub" for the information.

Ps. What about a “My Local” theme……one mostly About, but not restricted to, pubs, bars, cafes, etc?

hi bill,
what an interesting pic and fabulous notes.

i agree with you on the works of mr.reed and the type of person he was.

he truly was 'a personality'.

a very touching image.

Hi Bill,

I like this quaint pub! Looks like a great place to visit. I really like the brick facade of the Pub. Looks like an interesting street for photography. Great with the table outside too.

tfs, Lisa

Good shot .. sad story !
Oliver Reed was a grand Actor who died in 2nd May 1999,
There is one film of him that blew me out of my shoes:

Jean la Bęte !!

The story is simple enough: Jean la Bęte (Oliver Reed),is atrapper living in the wilds of Canada in the 1850s, and has 'orderd' himself a wife ..'Ladies' who are in prison in the UK.. but due to a deal
could changed there punishment if willing to go to Canada and marry men, living in the wild in absolute solitude .. Places where one hardley can find a fair young maiden (*_*) Etc etc
I think is was (poor) Rita Tushingham to be the 'happy' bride

Memmories here Billy, due to your photo . A fine posting and adds something to my grey cells, I would have never know where the 'bloke' died!

Hi Bill
Good one Bill, good note.
Maybe have seen a movie or two of him, cannot remember.
Will checkout John's advice and see the 'Jean la Bęte' one.
Good post Bill

Hello Bill,
Interesting background story!
The exterior is well captured, with great details in this fine entrance...
I notice the table and two chairs in front, maybe they don't expect a rush then!
