[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Although I have been having some great vacations in the past couple of year, photography always came second. At the end of last year I decided I wanted to change this and go on a vacation that was purely focused on my hobby. I looked at Iceland and the Faroer islands but finally decided to go to the Lofoten. A two week trip with a little Rorbruer and a rental car should be enough to make a few good photos and get a nice impression of the islands.

The photo you see here was taken on one of the first evenings on the islands. After some location scouting during the day I came across this little church standing close to the inlet of a Fjord. I knew that when the evening light was right, a position along the coast with the black steep mountains in the back would be perfect. Nature didn't disappoint me that evening and some wonderful rays of gold light were illuminating the Church perfectly and gave a slight warm touch to the ominous clouds.

Setting up my tripod was easy as the rock had some good flat areas. Of course I used my hotshoe spirit level to make sure that the horizon was running straight in my composition. A 0.6 grad ND filter was used to balance the exposure and a cable release was used to be sure no camera movement was captured.

There is for sure more to come from this vacation and eventually a travelogue will provide a great overview.

Hi Niek,
I like how you have captured the light highlighting that wonderful wooden church, as well as the thin strip of foreground grasses. The dark foreground & mountains assist in
making the church stand out. Thanks for the informative notes, did you also use mirror lock up?

Hi Niek,

Photography is matter of light! Your beautiful photo is clearly the proof of that.
I am deeply touched by the atmosphere you captured. Even if there are more dark zones in the composition, the whole image is luminous and vibrant. And this little church strongly anchored on the rock is in total harmony with the steep mountains. Powerful symbol. Thanks for this beauty and also for the informative notes.

Hi Niek,

This is a super shot, looking forward to seeing the others.

Hello Niek, you have timed this shot perfectly with the sun highlighting the church beautifully, and emphasising the steep black mountains in the bg.There is a nice echo of light from the sky too in the fg beach. The golden brown vegetation completes the picture.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Niek,

What a wonderful scene you have presented in this lovely picture!
I like the golden light on the grass and the contrast the church is getting from the rest of the breathtaking landscape. The clouds add a dramatic look to the picture, however, sunlight brings hope into the work.
Great sharpness and perfect lower POV for this work.
All in all, a wonderful composition!

Best regards,

Hi Niek, I really like your pov here with the gold band of sunshine across the middle. Still looks like somewhere you could freeze though with the mountains and the clouds. Fiona

Well not surprisingly with the search and good intention you prepared the scene with you were due to get it right and i strongly believe you did it the right way , the light is terrific sweeping across the narrow patch of land the church sits on without underexposing the mountains yet keeping sufficient details of the grassy FG to be valuable to the general composition. A lot of expectation and a no disappointment final result i reckon , looking forward to more images of your Lofoten trip Niek , TFS,

Hello Nie, this scene is just stunning, your perserverence paid off in spades.
I can't fault it, and I bet you are proud of it...I know I would be.
My kind regards,

Wow! Great capture and timing on getting the right lighting on the building with awesome dark clouds in the bg. Great pov and it has a good dof with sharp details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

Hi Niek,
Very well balanced catch of dramatic light. Not easy to find the best exposure for a contrasty scenery like this but you managed to solve the challenge really well. Congrats.
