[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today's photo originates from the Canary islands , precisely from Lanzarote the easternmost island of the archipel , only 125 kms off the coast of Africa. The region of Lanzarote called 'La Geria ' is where wine is produced in a very special and peculiar way.
Indeed this region is a fascinating wine growing region as the view of thousands of semi-circular walls surrounding hollows scraped from the thick layer of 'Picon'( the porous volcanic granules that trap the moisture ) each containing a single vine make this a truly agricultural landscape , this uniqua method of cultivation gives the region its unique appearance.In order to protect the vines from the Trade Winds the farmers have built those semi-circular walls , despite Lanzarote's arid climate the layer of picon is able to trap enough moisture to feed the vines. Most of the wine ( approx 75% ) that is produced in Lazarote is Malvasia which is one of the oldest varieties of grape. Naturally a drive through La Geria is recommended as is a visit to one of the many Bodegas where you can taste the local wine. I did !

Oh Lanzarote, surrealistic and beautiful land. I guess you visited some Cesar Manrique´s great art works.
I like the huge DOF captured here enhanced by the vertical frame. The special plantation in foreground, the construction in the middle and the volcanic mountains in background.
