Ok - thanks to 'Jackal's' advise I took a look at another website and learned about using the gradient tool... So, as I was not happy with my first posting of this idea and image I radically overhauled it with hours of tedious masking and layering and then pasting the buildings onto a newly created gradient background. The sky to the left is identical in colour to my original shot.. Fading to black, but I had made a mess of the sky before.

The buildings are a merge of 16 images taken over a 40 minute period as the sun set and the lights came on going from left to right - daylight to night.

I added the stars using the clone tool off a bright light on one of the buildings at right. HPP, a bit of fun and I'm sure it looks better than my first post of this.

Oh my God, this is incredible !!!
Amazing piece of work

Chapeau Maitre !

Hello David
Waw....what a beauty!
Amazing sharpness of the details and colors are fantastic!
Warm congratulation!

Are you happier with this one?
This is very cool .. the result is very surrealistic. Those towers are almost 3D against the whacky sky! Love the result of your experiments. Good work!! :)

Hi David...!
I like too much your work here.....
Well executed....great result.....
Image of great quality...

WOW! Amazing work David and all that processing would have me fingers bitten off by now! I love this idea, never would have thought of doing something like this! Excellent pp work!

Bonsoir David

Très beau tableau surréaliste!!
Un travail très réussi!!!
TFS et bravo!

Now that is kind of unique David ,i don't think it has been presented in such manner on this site before , what a view you 've got from the roof of your house ,you put to good use your wide angle lens as the view is gorgeous, sharp as a tack too, tedious work it must have been but fun at the same time ,the result was worthy of the effort you put into this work , you are a very determined person my friend, tfs,

Hi David!
An interesting effect you have "cooked" here.
I like the result at all.

Just a small suggestion. The hard edges around the skyscrapers could be avoid be reducing (or extending, depending on your selection) the selected area +/- 1 pxl and then fade is also.

Otherwise a lovely photo, especially the lights.

Have a nice evening

hi there,

yeah this one looks awesome, effort in pp work paid off. lovely the idea of stars.

Hi David

Hi David! Waw, great work. Fantastic work. Best regards Csabi

Definitely looks better! I think this really gives the effect of dusk into night-time, the tones are better and the gradient into shadow works well.

The stars are a nice touch - sometimes it takes a little photomanipulation to bring an image into line with our perceptions of the world. ;)

Boa noite david

.....( cont)

Hi David,
the transition is much smoother, definitely one of the best of these time-lapse shots that I have seen - well worth the effort

Hi David,

Very graphic effect, sounds like a lot of work,it just seems to merge a little quickly to dark on the right side, but that's being picky it's a really super shot, well done.

Hi David,

Very interesting effect you are showing us now. The grandiant tool use has been applied marvelously. It does look strange to the eyes, but I fully understand your goal, and you made it work wonderfully. I have to try it eventually, it seems to have a lot of potential for peoples with imagination. Great work and TFS.

HI David..nice shot...excellent PP work...very creative and artistic...well done.

Hi David,
This is one of the best experimental photo I have seen on TL for a long time! You cleverly improved your original which was already one of a kind!
What I like more, here is the subtle progression of the light on the buildings and sky. The stars add a feeric mood so effective with this kind of image. All my compliments! Annie

Hi David,
Very impressive night shot vith great POV, lighting and sharpness.TFS.

Hi David,

nice and different from what you usually do david :)

although, i must say that the subject as a whole could be improved with different ideas (same treatment) and different star/sky setup..

am myself considering doing a heavily post processed landscape :)

have a great day :)

Hello David

I saw the original, & wasn't that impressed, to be honest, but the hours of pp work in the repost here, have really paid off. A true work of art now, with impeccable sharpness & good colour & gradation. Nice entry in the theme too. Tfs!

This post is so wonderful and fascinating, David, I love your work very much.
Also to see the impressive new towers, that's great.
Thanks my friend, I enjoy looking at this shot very much
