|This is my first attempt at a waterfall. This was taken at the Larchmont Reservoir in Larchmont New York.|
The Larchmont Reservoir - James G. Johnson, Jr. Conservancy
The Larchmont Reservoir is a wildlife sanctuary, nature study area and flood control facility with lakeside trails and quiet woodland paths on 60 acres of land. The Mamaroneck Environmental Resource Center, adjacent to the Reservoir, consists of a visitor's center and several historic structures. Nature programs are conducted for adults and children throughout the year by the Sheldrake Environmental Center. The entrances to the Reservoir are located at 687 Weaver Street (park next to the tool shed), Sheldrake Lane (gravel parking area), the Pine Brook Tennis Courts (on Pine Brook Boulevard) and Dennis Drive (off Quaker Ridge Road).

I think you got the exposure just right on this one.
Lovely milky look with a clear Nov. view of the gently cascading water.
Yes, the best day to try a waterfall would be a grey and overcast one, that way you can leave the shutter open for a longer period of time - probably also helps to choose a higher F stop, then the camera needs an even longer shuttertime. I envy you for having a waterfall to try.
If you have time take a look at "concerto"s pictures. With a square crop and as little BG (like you have the hill with woods here) as possible he creates great impact pictures.
