Hi folks.... My first attempt at taking a photo of a butterfly...and using my 70-300 Lens (that I dont use much!!..much to Janice and Pams disgust!).. as I prefer Landscape I seem to stick to my 17-85 lens...

So today I branched out!! Yahoooooo...lol..

Today Jancie, Pam (coasties) and I took a long trip down to Ngatea, to the Water Gardens, and also further, on to Thames to the Butterfly and Orchid Garden.

Oh boy... was it hot in the butterfly house... 28 Deg C...with high humidity... it was like a Sauna !! and with all the stress of trying to get a decent butterfly photo... I was on FIRE !!! (talk about a hot flush!!!)...lol..

I took heaps of photos.. but only one decent... well maybe half decent one... trying to hold that long lens still was a task for me....( I have to practice with the lens more).

But I hope you like my first attempt... what do you think..appreciate your thoughts.

oops, I forgot to get the name of the butterfly.... Im sure Pam will know..

Hey Dawn, super shot and you took much more than one good b'fly photo...

This Citrus Swallowtail (yes, I read Pam's notes!) is a stunner, and he did sit there on the leave for a long time - long enough for us all to capture. Well done my friend.

I think we sweated out a lot of excess weight today at that butterfly house sauna... But what an interesting place it was.

Hi Cuz
Beautiful shot Dawn, love the colours and the detail is excellent. Hope to see many more like this.
Good job Cousin.
Cheers Pete.

Hi Dawn,

This is brilliant!!! For a first time attempt you did unbelievably well! So vivid in colour and sharp in detail! I agree with Janice & Pam, you should be using this lens much more!

Very well done

Hi Dawn,
So it was really a chalange for you to take a decent picture. Let me tell you a secret: You succeed! Excellent how this beautiful butterfly is captured my dear Lady! The BG crispy green colour is fine although a bit noisy (did you use Neat Image if not it can improve this wonderful photo even more?) Nevertheless a joy for the eye and gives me good feeling obout spring is on the edge. TFS my dear Dawn!

:) Later.....

Hi Dawn,
Great job! Welcome to my world.... This does look well composed and framed. Vibrant color saturation and sharp detail. The DOF was perfect here. Nice work. Keep working on these!

Hi Dawn,
that is a fabulous result for your first try. The colors and the sharpness are spectacular. You also composed this closeup very well. Very nice placing of the main subject and the framing is excellent. I would like to see a little softer BG, other wise its perfect.

Dawn, GREAT. Beautiful capture of butterfly, sharp, nice colors. :) Vandana

Very nice crisp and sharp macro. Excellent first attempt.

Composition: 8.5/10 (Subject positioning, crop, pov)

Creativity: 6/10 (Originality, usage of imagination, thinking outside the box)

It's a butterfly after all. ;o) But a good shot.

Rigor: 7/10 (Sharpness, Exposure, PP, Presentation,)

I suggest you apply the sharp on the butterfly only and not the leaves. Notice the apparent noise on the green leaves.

Exploitation of the light 9/10

Statement 8.5/10 (Ability of communicating an idea, a mood, a message with the image)

My humble assessment.

hi dawn!!
excellent butterfly, beautiful colors, sharpness and composition.

Hi Dawn,
So this is the first attempt, well done, very colorful, interesting and crisp, thanks for sharing,

This is an outstanding capture. The sharpness and exposure are perfect.

Excellent Dawn. Very goo detail and lovely colour. With only 5 varieties of butterfly down here and no butterfly houses I don't get the opportunity to even try. Well done and TFS,

Many thanks for your comment on ‘Street Busking’

Hi Dawn, what a beautiful colours! This butterfly is model in the nature - long leg, slim body, it is blond probably... just kidding. This detail is very good.
Thanks for it. Have a good day,

hi Dawn,
nice first shot, I tell u from my experience, shooting butterflies is a tough job. the sharpness has been increased so much that the picture has developed grains, (look at the background) should take care of that.TFS
