The other day I uploaded no 1 butterfly, here is no 2.

It was my first attempt at butterfly photography with my 70-300 lens, taken in a very hot and humid butterfly house in Thames... A day out with Janice and Pam (coasties)..we had lots of fun.

Thanks for taking a look folks.

Warm wishes
Dawn.

Again sorry dont know the name of his butterfly.. all my concentration was going into just trying to take a photo!

update: Pam (coasties) kindly emailed me the info on the butterfly for you all to read..thanks Pam.

Owl Butterfly (Caligo Memnon)

The Tawny Owl is Belize's largest butterfly, with a wingspan of 6" to 8". Groups of Owls often perform a distinctive fluttering dance to herald the dawn, and to celebrate the coming night (Owls are crepuscular - active at dawn and dusk.)

When not flying gracefully, Tawny Owls move with a jerky, halting gait, perhaps sampling the air for the scent of a female owl or a ripe banana.

The large eye spots on the underside of the Tawny Owl's wings closely resemble owl eyes. A predator would think twice before attacking something with such apparently large eyes, on the chance that there may be an equally large body on the other side.

Owl butterflies feed on rotting bananas and other fruits, while their caterpillars eat the leaves of banana, heliconia, ginger and other large-leafed plants. As the eggs develop they take on a dark appearance and will hatch at about day twelve, revealing striped caterpillars with forked tails, a spiny head and fleshy projections along the back giving them a distinctively dragonlike appearance. They feed by night and by day the larvae line up along the underside of the leaf's midrib and are quite cryptic.

Hi Dawn,
Brilliant work on this macro. Crisp details, excellent composition and the colours are stunning. One has to imagine that the eye spots is a pretty effective deterrant. Even at thumbnail size, it looks pretty intense. Well seen and executed. Keep up with the macro, you're doing great! Cheers, Todd

You have a very steady hand to be able to hand hold your zoom lens. This is a great photo, nice and sharp.

Hi Dawn

Excellent work on this butterfly. I know that they are very difficult to capture well. I find that butterflies can take a little extra sharpening than most other things. In this one, I think the leaves on the right side are well in focus and, as such, take some attention away from the butterfly. I did a workshop to show you what I mean.

Regards,
Joe

superb sharpness and colors dawn :)
hav you been taking lessons from Zoran(kokos101) ? :P
well balanced framing with the tree and leafs taking up 1/3 of the frame
very good contrast in the colors :)
well done, later :)

Hello Dawn

I like all the green leaves and the green out of focus background. It makes the butterfly stand out.

Regards, Sylvain

Superb shot! Very appropriate background and the leaves on the right hand side make it a very original not-just-another-butterfly-shot! Well done! Ed
