Butterflies are very important in our world.

There are more than 20,000 different kinds of butterflies in the world. The majority are found in tropical environments.

Butterflies are important as plant pollinators and as food for other animals (birds, mammals, spiders, and other insects).

Butterflies are also very sensitive to changes in the environment, and help warn us about unhealthy changes that are taking place.

Butterflies are very good fliers. They have two pairs of large wings covered with colourful, iridescent scales in overlapping rows. Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are the only insects that have scaly wings. The wings are attached to the butterfly's thorax (mid-section). Veins support the delicate wings and nourish them with blood.

Butterflies can only fly if their body temperature is above 86 degrees. Butterflies sun themselves to warm up in cool weather. As butterflies age, the color of the wings fades and the wings become ragged.

This beauty was at the Butterfly and Orchid Gardens at Thames where Pam, Dawn and I visited last Monday. It is New Zealand's first and only tropical butterfly and orchid house.

I'm not sure what type of butterfly it is, so if anyone knows please let me know.

Thank you for looking. . .

Hi Janice,

The black butterfly would be difficult to focus/meter on but you did great. The colors and details are very good. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Janice, A gorgeous butterfly with its spread wings. Good sharpness as I can see the serration of the antennaes. Good Note as well. Greetings! Danilo

Hi Janice,
Sorry I can't help with the ID, but it's a beauty. Excellent composition and framing of the shot. The exposure was really good to bring out the rich black color and sharp detail in the wings. Great contrasting yellow colors. Well done!
