Machu Picchu is a city located high in the Andes Mountains in modern Peru. It lies 43 miles northwest of Cuzco at the top of a ridge, hiding it from the Urabamba gorge below. The ridge is between a block of highland and the massive Huaynac Picchu, around which the Urubamba River takes a sharp bend. The surrounding area is covered in dense bush, some of it covering Pre-Colombian cultivation terraces.

Machu Picchu (which means "manly peak") was most likely a royal estate and religious retreat. It was built between 1460 and 1470 AD by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, an Incan ruler. The city has an altitude of 8,000 feet, and is high above the Urubamba River canyon cloud forest, so it likely did not have any administrative, military or commercial use. After Pachacuti’s death, Machu Picchu became the property of his allus, or kinship group, which was responsible for it’s maintenance, administration, and any new construction.

About 1,200 people lived in and around Machu Picchu, most of them women, children, and priests. The buildings are thought to have been planned and built under the supervision of professional Inca architects. Most of the structures are built of granite blocks cut with bronze or stone tools, and smoothed with sand. The blocks fit together perfectly without mortar, although none of the blocks are the same size and have many faces; some have as many as 30 corners. The joints are so tight that even the thinnest of knife blades can't be forced between the stones. Another unique thing about Machu Picchu is the integration of the architecture into the landscape. Existing stone formations were used in the construction of structures, sculptures are carved into the rock, water flows through cisterns and stone channels, and temples hang on steep precipices.

This place is breath taking. It was the final destination of a 5 day hiking trail tru the mountains. On the 5th day early in the morning we started our last climb to get to this magical place before sun rise. The Incan relegion was largely related to the nature surrounding them. For example, the condor was a mithycal animal to them as it was supposed to carry them to the afterlive. For those with a lively imagination, the smaller mounain in the back has the shape of a condor. The two tops on either side are the wings and the head is in the middle.

Hello Pedro.
This is a wonderful postcard from Machu Picchu!I love your composition which gives me a complete idea of that place.I also love the light and the colours.
Regards, Francesco

Absolute magic Pedro. Wonderful perspective, natural colours. For mine leave the people there, they give an idea of how large this citadel was. TFS

Olá Pedro
Este lugar é realmente fantástico, e a sua foto não deixa nada a desejar... Estive em Machu Picchu em 99. Gostaria de voltar este ano com minha namorada. Não sei se tenho pique para encarar a caminhada de 5 dias...

Hi Pedro,
This is a superb landscape photo. I like this POV that show it in perspective with the surrounding mountains. The colors and sharpness are excellent. Great composition and very interesting note.

Awe inspiring place, Pedro, and you are lucky to have seen it. You brought back a beautifully composed picture showing us a very nice overall view of the village. The light is very nice as well. Thanks for sharing this beautiful place not accessible to many of us. Excellent!

The color seems a tad flat but I like the way you backed up away from the scene to give more perspective. B

Hi Pedro,
Beautiful landscape. very good composition and framing. have a nice day . TFS

Excellent landscape! Placing persons on the picture help to evaluate the size! I saw a couple of documentary about the place... House were solid during this period :)

Wow,I am speechless when I look at that! How lucky you are to have visited such a heaven place! Absolutely beautiful! Thanks a lot to make us discover such a nice place on Earth! The composition is excellent! Michel

Postcard quality capture, absolutely beautiful, great in every aspect.

Classic capture of the beautiful place. Excellent note about it too.

Hi Pedro,
Same comment as your other shot from same POV, except here you include the guided tour! Telling a story about what this is about today... Doesn't seem to be too crowded though, I guess the accessibility has something to do with that...

Hi Pedro, this is a very well known historical place, and you give us a very good view of it. Colours and details are all nice and clear. Well done,

Oh you lucky one! Machu Picchu is my dream place to see!.
The composition is just fantasctic - those majestic mountains surrounding and somehow protecting the remains of the city. Taking photo with people standing there at the bottom was a very good ideas as it gives perspective of the size of this place.
The colours and the sharpness make this place look really magical.

Hi Pedro,
I don't konw how I missed this when it was first posted, this is one amazing photo. This is a place that I have always dreamt of visiting and I think you have really taken me there.
One question, the image seems to be larger than the normal TL size and the note area is defintly larger. How do you do that?
