What an Eye-sore!

Now after seeing Dawn’s photo Think of New Zealand and . . ., showing the countryside full of sheep, I searched for a similar shot. And this is what I found.

This is ‘up north’. Here you can see some of the beautiful countryside above Whangarei, east of Hikurangi on the way to Whananaki on the east coast, and below the Bay of Islands. . .

But what are those green things???

Not so long ago farmers used small rectangle hay bales as preferred supplement for livestock. Reasons given included ease of feeding, transportability, suitability for cattle, warm feed in snow, less wastage during feeding.

But now we have these large plastic covered hay bales all over the paddocks.

Those square hay bales once seen scattered over fields around New Zealand have given way to large bales of hay wrapped in blue or green polythene. Farmers now take what they need for their stock and then close up the bale. Looking like large unnaturally green powder puffs, they appear out of place against the green hills.

Quite an eye-sore, I think!!

Great use of the greens in the field. The dark blue sky and cloud with patches of shade on the ground adds to a warm summer day feeling.

Haha, very true. Maybe they are in a shed with heaters! Nice landscape Janice, I like the way the shadows work in this, make it very 3 dimensional. It was a fun night the other night, next time it's your's and my night for the honours!! Cheers, Karey

Love those clouds, love those green fields.. this must be New Zealand of course!.. but wait no SHEEP ! are your 12 hiding behind the hay bales Janice... LOL..

These are to save the farmer time I think..he doesnt have to lug it out of the hayshed or pack it into the hayshed.. its there ready.. just have to unzip it I supose.. Im sure its got a zip on it???? lol..Im just wondering what happens to the plastic afterwards.. dumped into a landfill !?..of course not its recycled!

Beautifil photo Jancie, nice an sharp too.

Well Done...
Cheers Dawn.

Janice,

Beautiful despite the plastic on the hay. I just noticed for the first time that these are being used on some farms here in Washington State. I agree that they don't look as nice. It just kind of loses that nostalgic, farmland kind of appearance some. Anyway, God's best to you always,

Tim

beautiful photograph

Hi Janice,
that´s typically NZ. Lots of green! I miss it!
I love your picture, even you left the sheeps somewhere else...
Great colours!
Cheers,
Sabrina

Hi Janice,

I can't picture New Zealand without sheep, it seems so un-natural!! :))
Still great POV, vivid colours and a fantastic sky!!
Well done!

Constantinos

Lovely landscape Janice!
Those colours, such as the idea, is great!

Cheers,
Carla

How can that be? What do you mean "No sheep"?
Lovely calming mood a realxing green under a lovely sky.

Great shot Janice. Very effective with the various shades of green stepping back into the scene. The clouds give it the final touch.
Well done.
Cheers,
Pat.

Outstanding!that clouds are awesome,beautiful scenery...

Hi Janice,

They can look quite ugly especially when left in the paddocks too long, very attractive when lined up or stacked though. Good rural scene, excellent colours and well presented. TFS,
David

Very eye-pleasuring scenery Janice. You took it with great composition. Strong colors are amazing too!
Elif

Janice, es evidente que tu país es una preciosidad, estoy deseando visitarlo, em han contado tantas cosas que está entre mis proridades, ahora sólo falta encontrar el momento adecuado y mucho se debe a ver tus fotos.

Hello Janice,

Somehow I missed this. The clouds are quite lovely along with the beautiful greens. Superb clarity.

Best wishes,
Danilo

Wow! We must still be in the dark ages when it comes to feeding the live stock...you still see the 'normal' bales of hay here, they aren't square but big coils of hay.
Wonderful vivid landscape, great lighting giving different textures and shades to the scene, crisp images and very colorful! TFS,
Fran

Whereever it is I like the pattern and different shades of green together with a perfect sky. TFS Thomas

Hi Janice,
Those puffy clouds do it for me. That ofcourse in combination with the beautiful colored land. The different colors of green are beautiful and the sun is bring out the best in it. I realy love the depth in this photo.

What a perfect blue puffy clouded sky! I just saw fields of these on our trip last weekend only they were white, we joked that we'd finally found out where they grow marshmallows!! Very nice photo Janice.
