This is a Nelumbo Lotus Flower growing at the Ngatea Water Gardens.

I was so delighted to see this plant, and I didnít even know what it was. I donít remember ever seeing a LOTUS flower before, and here was a whole bunch growing in the water pond at the gardens. It is so beautiful and even the seed heads looked like a work of art.

Nelumbo, sole member of botanical species Nelumbonaceae, consists of only two kinds, Asian and American.

Nelumbo
are water flowers commonly known as lotus. Nelumbo is what is most commonly meant by the rather ambiguous term "lotus".

The Lotus is similar to, but not closely related to, the water-lilies of the family Nymphaeaceae.

The lotus grows on long stems a couple of feet above the water.

The central seed pod of the lotus is a distinguishing feature.

They are almost entirely edible Ė the tubers, seeds and young leaves. In China all parts of it are supposed to have medicinal properties.

Donít you think this is beautiful? The new bud slowly opening and soon to look like the flower in the background.

Nice use of DOF here but I feel that compoition could be better a little... Little more time spended and you will have perfect flower shot... I like green hue of colors very much here! :)

Hi Janice,
I'm glad you got your first personal glimse of the lotus flower and was able to take photo(s) of it. Lotus are also a favorite of mine. The unopened and crisp bud looks so beautiful against the mature flower on the b/g. Exquisite composition. Regards. Danilo

Hello Janice,
This isa very beautiful flower phoot with great softness and tenderness mood. I like how you've composed it to have the bud in focus with the future appearence blurred in the back.
Greetings.

Hi Janice
I like your notes as they add to this shoot, "was so delighted to see this plant, and I didnít even know what it was. I donít remember ever seeing a LOTUS flower before" Made me picture a young child seeing something for the first time, eyes wide open and squeal of delight.
The DOF you chose is excellent as it put the viewer where you want.

Hi Janice,
Such brilliant detail in this delicate flower. The composition and use of a shallow DOF is very well done to allow the unopened flower in the FG to become the centre of the attention. Excellent image. Cheers, Todd

Hi Janice,
And yes, I think this is absolutely beautiful. Sometimes we feel so good just by seeing such a wonderful sight. You captured this so well. Love the shades of green and the soft light. Well done.

Noel

Stunning and original, Janice -- we've seen lots of open blossoms but not many buds and this one is superb! I love the open blossom in the BG as a setting for the bud

Hi Janice ;)
simple, soft and very beautiful... compliments,
J ;)

Lovely Janice, perfect focus. Delightful shades of green and excellent detail. We have some growing in a fountain in the city but they are always in shadow and too far away from the edge of the pool for me to get a decent shot. TFS,
David

Hi Janice,
Your DOF is right on. Love the color tone and the sharpness of the Lotus pod. The lighter flower bg really makes this stand out. BEAUTIFUL and TFS Julie

Hello Janice !

Another fine botanical beauty (^_^) . I love the soft tones and colors. Lotus are indeed such beautiful flowers.

We are lucky here when we have one water lilly in our pond at home (^_^).
Keep on the good work!
Robert

Hi Janice,
I can see why the Chinese feature the lotus in a lot of art work, the flower is truly beautiful. Your capture of the bud with the bloom in the background is well done! Colorful, crisp, great dof and pov, thanks for sharing,
Fran

Hi Janice
Wonderful soft tones with a nice sharp focus on the "young beauty". Like the composition with the diagonal in fg and blurred full bloom flower in bg. Beautiful presentation.

Paul
