A Bit About Southport Pier...
Often referred to as the first true 'pleasure pier' Southport Pier is historically important it was one of the earliest pier structures to be erected using iron.
Designed by James Brunlees was built at a cost of 8,700 work started on the 4th August 1859 construction of this vast pier was quick its full 3,600ft (1,098m) length was completed for the grand opening on 2nd August 1860.
In 1868 Southport Pier was further extended then reaching a length of 4,380ft (1,335m). It was made shorter after various gales, rough seas and fires.
In 1990 Sefton Council applied to have the Grade II listed pier demolished due to rising debts and repair costs. This was defeated by a single vote and led to the formation of the 'Southport 2000 - save the pier group' and later the 'Southport Pier Trust' by 1999 sufficient funding had been obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund and European Merseyside Objective to restore the complete structure.Restoration was completed in two phases. Phase one concentrated on the restoration of the main structure, along with the building of a new pavilion to house an visitors centre. The second phase fitted out the pier, providing a new pier tram, deck lighting, restoration of the Victorian Shelters In May 2002 restoration was completed and the full length of Southport Pier was again opened to the public.
