Hermit crabs are decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea [1]. They are not closely related to true crabs.

Most species of hermit crabs have long soft abdomens, and to protect themselves, they live inside salvaged empty seashells. Most often they use the shells of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks. The tip of the hermit crab's abdomen is adapted to clasp strongly onto the columella of the snail shell.

This habit of living in a second hand shell is what gave rise to the popular name "hermit crab", which is a reference to the idea of a hermit living alone in a small cave.

There are about five hundred known species of hermit crabs in the world, most of which are aquatic, living in saltwater, at a range of depths from shallow coral reefs and shorelines to deep sea bottoms. However in the tropics, a number of species are terrestrial.

Amazing sharpness Tim and great light and colors.
Cool image!

I don't know if anybody has presented such a "portrait" style photograph of a hermit crab before! Great focus on its eyes, it doesn't seem altogether pleased to be photographed though.
I've always known that hermit crabs recycled shells, but didn't really think about the neatness of it until now.
Great work

Hi Tim,
This is such a great macro.
It would certainly have gone down well on Trek Nature.

Hi Mr Hermit! We have these little guys here and the kids make pets out of them! It's SO cool how they get tired of a shell and move into another one! Really nice shot Tim!

Hi Tim,
Great note and a very nice macro shot of this hermit crab. Although at present we do not have any as members of our family (pets), we have had many in the past, and one of my daughters in particular will enjoy this shot very much. Great control of light and detail!
All the best,

Wonderful macro Tim. The detail is great, I have never been this close to one before, never really thought they were so small. Is this a pet? I ask because your fingers don't have much sand in them - just kidding, these are pretty quick creatures, I thought. I like how you show the contrast in size by having your fingers in the shot, not always a good idea in my opinion, but in this case works well.

Hi Tim,

A very good close-up photo of the hermit crab. The crab seem to be looking straight at the camera lens. It's probably curious seeing the image of another hermit crab in front of it. Excellent POV.

This is a verry good macro photo, with a beautyfull detail.Cheers.Alin

I happened to see this photo when I opened TL this morning. It was on special display.

I've always wondered about hermit crabs, so it was an opportunity to learn and see one close up.

Great shot, my wife was trying to convince herself to pick up a crab at the beach yesterday, but she couldn't do it. Really glad you did though, because this is an amazing macro shot. Great focus on the eyes, and perfect DOF.
