First i must say that with an XTI you can expect more quality. You probably had a focus problem, the autofocus could not find by itself where to make focus. You should have aim at the tree and maintained the button half depress, reframe than shoot. As far as exposure is concerned it needed overexposure. Try to take photo in RAW mode and then make correction with Photoshop or DPP from Canon. I have done worse on my first homework...
I like the subject, the picture is nice too bad a little too dark.
Ofter I have the same problem.
