Life on the Edge – 192 metres high

This is another photo I took when my husband and I had lunch in the Observatory Restaurant in the SKY Tower in Auckland City.

Unfortunately it was a very dull day and here, facing north/east, there was no colour – only a silvery grey reflecting from the grey water and sky!!

While we were there 5 people and a guide walked on a 1.2 metre-wide walkway all the way around the Sky tower – 192 metres above the ground, no handrails and nothing but air either side of them!

They traversed 360 degrees around the Sky Tower – the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere and I took lots of photos of them.

They started out real slowly – I could see the nerves working in 2 of them, the first and the third ladies. But the other 3 were quite cool and collected – especially the man.

This is the 4th lady on the walk – she was cool and calm – she showed no fear.

As they were slowly walking along the guide kept stopping to take photos of them all. And from inside the restaurant many of us were taking photos of them too.

Check out these photos ONE and TWO and THREE

This is Today’s Workshop. In it you can get a better idea of how far down the buildings are - or how high up we are!!

Hello Janice,

A wonderful series of shots!
We got excellent value for money today!
My son would have loved to have done this! He was in NZ a couple of years ago and did the whole scary thing ... bungie jumping, sky diving, etc. I just quaked looking at the photographs!

You have really portrayed a sense of differing emotions here. It is a bit like newspaper photography!
Superby clear and detailed.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Mmm... flashy coveralls they're wearing Janice, could have been an entry for Helen's clothes theme too ;o).
I like the way you have her hanging here, but the guide photographing them in the WS is my favourite, as it shows more of the environment. The other pics make this a terrific series. What impresses me most is how you managed to avoid reflections from the restaurant's windows. I only found one on the "guide" shot.
Well done.

Hi Janice,
Ha this is great, did she went down on those ropes? Anyway a great shot with excellent contrast. Good to see you support the Dutch "Orange" football team as well :-)

After looking at the workhshop Janice I will definitely pass on that walk. I think the grey skies helped you out here making the red of the overalls stand out more. Good detail and the lass nicely placed in the frame.

Great moment!
I love the clarity of this -- despite the window you have done a marvellous job - fine details and superb composition

Hi Janice,
I always thought that the New Zealanders are a bit crazy and now you have provided the final proof!
Cheers, Sunil

Hi Janice,

This is awesome shot.. great colours, contrast and sharpness, I can't believe she look so cool, smilley and as cool as a cucumber...:P I won't be able to do so. Excellent shot!

Have a good nite,

Hi Janice,
You disappoint me, I expected to see a shot from out there looking in ;)
As a signwriter I got used to working at heights...but I think I might just give that a miss nowadays.
It would have been fun to clone out the safety lines, that would be startling.
PS, sorry...I couldn't resist...

Amazing to me that someone can do this AND smile at the same time :) I'm sure I'll die immediately.
Excellent picture. Well done.

Amazing capture.
Brave one!

I wonder if they had to sign some kind of agreement that they take full responsibility if the rope was to let go or something ... that's what ppl do when they do Bungiee.
