[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Marlena's coloring is very dramatic. What is even more striking to me is how striking the black and white conversions are of her. This conversion was done in the Channel Mixer with the Blue channel increased. I usually use the Blue channel more for dark skinned subjects but in this case I liked the effect.

Once the shot was converted in the Channel Mixer, a duplicate Overlay Channel was created (Layer 1) with the opacity reduced to about 10%. I got this method from Siarhei Biazberdy (who is far better at portraits and Photoshop than I am). By blending the Overlay channel at 10% the picture picks up some contrast and highlights. The Shadows and Highlights adjustments were then used as well as a slight increase in contrast.

Using the Blue Channel the focus is on her eyes and facial features...this worked well here with a shallow depth of field (F2.8).

Black and White conversions allow for a low of creativity which is not as easy in color.

In choosing subjects and in choosing the shots to use I shy away from smiling pretty shots in most cases. I am attracted to portraits that are not quite so obvious.

Thanks for all the great comments and critiques.

hello Roger ,

Thanks first for bringing back Marlena. She certainly is a very sweet model. What a lovely personality she has. Her new hair style is pretty, and makes her look even younger.

Your note is certainly very complete , and I have to add this one as a favorite, not only because of the beauty of the portrait but also the waulity of the note.

Thanks for sharing your tips, and discoveries.

Nice off-centre portrait Roger. I like the dof given and her natural facial expression conveying to the angle taken. She's so beautiful.

Hi Roger,

I like this photo. Much better than the previous one. The B/W convertion, though not easy in my openion, to have a perfect tonal range and texture enhancement, but this image certainly has a WOW! factor! The model's expressions are great! Well done,
Regards, Balwant

Very beautiful model and excellent sharpness on her eyes, i like the B&W conversion:)

Very well done

Nice portrait in b&w.Excellent sharpness and focus on her face, eyes.
Very well done.
Have a nice weekend

Lovely natural expression - trepidation, amusement, shyness? Perfect control of the shallow DOF here, nice use of light. Everything here feels totally right. Great job!

Beautiful and so natural!!!
Great work Roger!

Hi Roger,
Marlena must be proud of her portrait!
Great pose and capture of her expresion.
The B&W is excellent but I think that a sepia version could be interesting too, considering her natural color of skin and hair. I propose you a workshop just for you see what I mean.
Congratulations! Annie

Hello Roger.
To my mind BW is much better for this portrait ( to compare with previous colour one) What I don't like here - shallow depth of field) making her neck blurred. I understand that You used 2.8 because of lack of the light. And ISO is high... But for BW You can even use ISO 3200 with apperture let's say 4.
Probably it would add some grainess to the shot. But who said grains are bad for BW portrait;)
Thanks for sharing,

very good portrait, She is really pretty in this shot and thanks to your note very helpful tips

very nice B&W, the contrasts are great, and the pose of the model is very nice, quite shy, and beautiful

She has an adorable little smile Roger! I think you caught her personality well! Nice BW tones, I like the natural pose, without her looking into the camera! Just off center adds SO much to this! Nice work!

ciao Roger
a wonderful expression in her face.. full of something sweet.. excellent b&w! thanks
ciao Marco
