Ngauruhoe crater

Flying over the Tongariro terras I also flew over the crater of Mount Ngauruhoe a stunning view of the red iron oxide covering the sides of the mountain.

There are several possible explanations for the mountain's name. The most plausible is Nga Uru Hoe, meaning "throwing heated stones".

In the early 2000s Mount Ngauruhoe was used as a stand-in for the fictional Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, achieving worldwide exposure. [source: Wikipedia.com]

PP work: No crop, only a slight adjustment of brightness and contrast.

Addition: In my updated intro I mention a Work Shop regarding sensor cleaning. In the WS of this posting you can find the instructions how I clean my sensor even when I'm on my way. Hope you can use it.

Great capture Hans, excellent POV and detail, colours are amazing, well photographed

Nice view Hans - shows the colours very clearly. Nice contrast too..

I got to clean my sensor - but I'm going to let the pros do it at the local N*k*n service centre.....

Hi Hans
Fantastic view,great capture.
Very good details,excellent clarity.

HI Hans,
that's so amazing and interesting - I've never seen such a crater - those colours, the whole - it's like out of space ...
Wonderful post, you can be proud and happy that you have seen such a fantastic place, thanks for sharing it with us

Hello Hans! Very interesting POV, fantastic shot, cosmic landscape. Great effect. Good work. Well done!

Hallo Hans.
Prachtige opname van deze crater. Moet ik toch eens op die manier van de Etna zien te maken.
De kleuren doen het fantastisch hier.
Perfecte scherpte en diepte.
Groeten, Jan

What amazing colours - I love that red... It is so good to be looking down on Ngauruhoe from up above.

I was at the lower end of Lake Taupo one year when Ngauruhoe was erupting - it was a bit scary, but we stayed there all weekend - Dave was sailing at Turangi.

And thanks for those sensor cleaning notes - very clear and easy to understand. It isn't as hard to do as I used to think it was - and it's quicker and cheaper than sending teh camera away to be cleaned.

My only complaint is that you didn't clean mine while you were staying here!!

Thanks Hansie

A shot for the "National Geographic" ! Wonderful colours and very good light ! Impressive picture ! And thanks for your WS !
Best regards

Hi Hans,

Definitely one for National Geographic, lovely detail and colours, using a fast shutter speed and large aperture has worked perfectly.

Hello Hans,

It is not surprising that this was used in The Lord of the Rings. It is certainly fearfully awe inspiring! It looks like the scene of some great catastrophe!
Your shot, taken from above, allows us to appreciate its potential danger!
It is sharp, and well composed.
Thank you for sharing this experience of your interesting trip.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your warm comments on 'My 300th posting ... in the snow!'

I clicked on the link....their photo of the crater is a shocker. I'm sure they would buy this image from you, it is stunning.

Hoi Hans
Zat je in een helicopter?
Knappe kleuren en ziet er echt wel de moeite uit om te doen.

Hi Hans, Very sharp interior view of this active volcano crater. Not often seen as clear as this image. We climbed around here as schoolboys in our tramping club, so the memories come back. Escellent colours. TFS. Murray.
