[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This series of Kit turned out pretty well regarding the light but only because I shot in RAW and was able to boost the exposure in CS4. I am just beginning to understand light and how to use it but I had a very lucky break yesterday. I bumped into an old friend who has been doing lighting for the movies for 30 years and he and I will be building some light boxes this next week which should help. When I get the boxes finished I will email anyone who is interested so that you can build your own. It looks like it is pretty easy and very inexpensive and will take the place of an expansive lighting set up. Yesterday I purchased a Flash/light Meter which is really essential when using multiple light sources. When using this device you place it where the subject is and trigger the flashes...the unit will give you the proper Fstop/shutter speed for any ISO setting.


Kit is a wonderful model for this kind of lighting. Her features are beautiful and dramatic which is great for this one light set up. In this case one flash unit was mounted on a stand on the left side of the shot.

elegant shot Roger... it has a feel of class... she looks like a James Bond girl! I like your touch... the lighting the contrast and sharpness definitely is exquisite... TFS

well taken. i like the pose and the feel of the photograph. kit has an enchanting smile. it is a good light arrangement to accenuate kit's features while maintaining the soft expression of hers.
i have tried a workshop to slightly stretch the light arrangement to achieve dramatic impact.

I think it is a little underexposed, but you are on good path to achieve perfect result.
I don't like the crop. It would be nice to see the hands. (Remember Mona Lisa)

Yes PLEASE! I would love information on the light boxes!! This is nice, wish her face was a little more illuminated, as my eyes go down rather than up to her face! Excellent sharpness, love the teasing smile!

The light boxes sound interesting, I'll certainly be open to hearing about them! My rudimentary setup is fine but it's always fun to try something new, particularly when I want to explore a new lighting technique.

The difficulty with placing the light source so far to the left - and yet so close to the subject - is that you get harsh and sometimes unflattering shadows, and rapid fade-off of light - so that by the time it reaches her arm and hip towards the right, it is far weaker than when it hit her face.

Pulling the flash unit further away will result in a more even spread of light, and you can always compensate for a slower shutter by using a tripod - which I did for years.

Kit's dress is gorgeous - she looks lovely.
