Gannet on her Nest

I love it when the Gannets arrive back at Muriwai to nest. Here is close-up of Mother Gannet sitting on her nest.

Gannets range widely in NZ seas during winter but return to their breeding sites around August / September.

The nests are made out of seaweed and guano and are within close proximity of other nests. They usually lay just one egg, incubated for 44 days by both sexes.

The chicks fledge at between 13-17 weeks old where they will fly across the Tasman Sea to Australian waters. They remain there until 3-7 years old when they will return to their breeding site and will breed for the first time at about 5 years old.

I was asked about PP work and use of a tripod:
No tripod was used. With the birds flying above and below there is no place for a tripod as you are moving your camera too much. This bird was quite close to the viewing platform and I shot her through some rails.

PP work -
Photoshop CS2 used Shadows and Highlights. Plus Smart Sharpen 22, and a little low saturation.
Paint Shop Pro 9 using Clarity 1.0, just to bring out the shadows a little more.

Hi Janice,
A very sharp close-up of the head and beak of this Gannet.
Very nice pastel colors and accurate details in the plumage.
Nice composition and excellent light.
Nicely framed and neatly presented.

Oh Jannie! This has got to be one of your best ever! Nice details, wonderful close crop! I love the softness of the feathers, just amazing work!

Amazingly intimate, close shot - great detail and the flow of composition - head, beak, light and shadow - is exquisite.

You must've been close to catch this!

Hi Janice,

This is wonderful, the fine details in her feathers are superb. The colors are amazing as well, especially her blue eye makeup ;) The POV and crop are excellent as well.

Warm regards,

Hello Janice,

This is you at your best, photographing the birds.
The lines, the composition, the unbelievable personal closeness make it an exciting experience.
I feel a little like a bird hypnotist ... look into my eyes!!
I can imagine the pleasure you felt on capturing this!
I just love it!
It will have to go into my favourites!

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Beautiful shot with an awesome DOF and sharpness. I would like to see notes on PP and tripod.

A lovely image. Great detail and nice perspective

Very good composition. The detail in the crest and eyes is superb but would have liked to see more sharpness at the tip of the beak. My eyes are drawn towards the tip of the beak because of the blur. But otherwise, nice job.

Lovely photo Janice, wonderful details in her plumage and the shadow from her beak is exquisite.

Hi Janice

Like the tight crop of this gannets head, the colours, shadows and details are all very nice.
The end of the beak could have been a touch sharper as there was enough light for you to stop down even further but I guess you did not have enough time to change your settings.
Nice one.

Regards Derek

very eye catching portrait.
nice for use tight crop,it give this portrait strong as well as its beak give interesting composition from diagonal lines.
love the clean soft look but good sharpness and clarity, nice light and shaow with some colors accent on its head and eyes:)

nice photograph because of its color and mood.

Janice, Nice creative closeup here... I like it! I don't think I would have ever considered getting this close. You've opened my eyes for what to try next time.

Stunning shot Janice, the colours are lovely and the focus is perfect

Hi Janice,
This is a perfect close up of the gannet's head! Perfect sharp showing all the little feathers. No wash out of the bright areas, excellent camera control. Great post my dear!

Bonjour Janice,
Magnifique photo très bien cadré.
L'oiseau est très beau et semble songeur. On dirait que les lignes de son bec sont fait au pinceau.
Bien vu.

This is good Janice , very good indeed . You did quite well under the circumstances , rails and other flying birds in the way , clear and sharp as a tack and of course the tight crop is ideal here , a lovely capture ! Thanks for sharing and for the short but informative note as well ,

Hi Janice - Lovely sharp details, especially of the feathers. I find it auite amazing that it's a handheld shot, given the weight of camera and lens. I love to just look at this peaceful image, the soft goldenbrown head, the bright blue eye rims and the aspect from above. Well done indeed. TFS and have a good week! Cordelia

What a lovely capture, Janice! Great close-up indeed!
Very nice texture, wonderful colors and details.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Have a beautiful day!

Hello Janice!

Hummmm, Sorry I have to scroll back at many galleries to catch up missed works, and find favorites.

Here is a great one. Of course , I like gannets too, this helps a lot . But you nailed this one in a very elegant way. The textures and the whites are really well captured .
