Gulls over the Marker lake

While sailing from Volendam to the former island of Marken it boat was accompanied by a flock of gulls and I took some shots. Overall gull shot appear quite boring to me, so I can imagine you have the same thoughts here. But I wished to post this one due the shallow DOF with the two gulls in the background blurred and the top one in focus (I think).

PP work: To get to this I had to select the left lower gull and blur it a bit more and I also soften the edges after this action. Further more I adjusted the levels and curves a bit a small crop, resized and sharpened using USM and finally added frame.

Hi Hans!
Congratulations for your timing.. three birds flying!
Excellent PP work: I like the focus only on the first bird and the shallow DOF so much.
Very well composed. Congratulations.
ciao! vanda

Hello Hans,

Although you may believe gull shots to be a little boring, instinctively, you knew this was interesting. The positioning of the focal bird, with its outstretched wings covering the other two, like some protective mother, is charming, and creates a really well balanced shot.
Your pp work has paid dividends, blurring the b/g bird suffiently. Maybe it would have been useful to clone out the part bird (top r/h corner) as it doesn't add to the shot and, I always feel, three is such a good number for composition.

My warmest regards,
Bev :-)

WOW! Deze is echt super mooi! Hoe krijg je het voor elkaar om zo goed te timen en dan ook de hele vogel scherp te krijgen?! Mooie achtergrond, kleuren en compositie. Heel goed gedaan.
