[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was honoured to be the sacristan for a recent interfaith service and was able to take a few pictures before and after the service. Things were so much quieter afterward!
The service was a commemoration of World Water Day last week. So the organizers used lots of wonderful blues in the dressing of the chapel. One of the organizers is a Unitarian Universalist seminary student and brought this lovely chalice for the table.
The natural lighting for the chapel is primarily through clerestory windows (windows in the upper level) that are tinted deep gold, so the effect is very warm.

Tech: composed in camera (with the flame as close to the hitpoint as possible), captured in raw, converted to jpg, neutralized the effect of the windows by opening a second image taken with a flash, used "match colour" in Photoshop CS5, faded the effect by 50% (to keep some of the rich warm tones created by the windows), resized for Treklens, sharpened and added a single pixel frame.

As always: many thanks for your generous feedback and my apologies if I am slow in responding -- I am writing final exams this week and next

Hi Silke,
The beautiful blue colour attracted me to this thumbnail!! A very nice composition and perfectly exposed. I always find photographing flames difficult because I always overexpose them!
P.S. my husband's cousin lives in Waterloo!

Hi Silke,
A very good example of Faith which is like a flame. The more you take care of it the more it lights in good health!
A very sharp image with perfect use of available lighting in the chapel.
Splendid colors and glorious reflections in the metal container.
Well done for this neat work.
My best regards,

Francis Xavier

I like the way you brought the chalice to the lower corner, although i would suggest to leave a little more room between the bottom of the chalice and the frame, just to get a better fit with the left border.
Gold tones reflecting on the green/blue dressing are very sharp.
Great details also on the chalice surface.
Thanks for sharing this moment.

Hi Silke,
At first glance I thought the ornament was floating on water. The reflections on the ornament are colorful and the detail here is excellent. I really like how you composed this shot. Very nice work.- Kevin

There's that blue I love! And I can see you in the reflections of the candle! I love this color, it's very soothing! Nice work Silke!

Hello Silke

Alot of symbolism in your image. The sheer material looks alot like water, the flame from the candle, and the placement of it in the image. I won't go into my religous POV of all this. Just very powerful and well done.

Apart from the great capture of the vibrant colors,it would be very easy I think to OE, with these subjects textures,& due to light reflections on the golden color & texture of the chalice.Silke,I really like how you have made the table cover appear as though it was a small pond & the chalice was floating on its water.Do I understand your notes correctly, that this is two images merged into one?I'm not familiar with your photographic term "Hitpoint" I probably use another term ,but could you enlighten me please.

Very beautiful to look at Silke. The cloth looks like water, shimmering in the light. And the jar and light are quite beautiful
Well done

HI Silke...great shot...excellent colors and tones...nice work.

This is so pretty Silke. The color and lighting is wonderful and you have a fantastic composition. What a beautiful well composed shot. TFS and good luck with your finals, Lori

An interesting subject Silke.I was really taken in by the soft drape; it really does look like water.
The composition is spot on with the chalice off centre.
[What is the chalice made from? Its' colours are beautiful.]
A very artistic shot,it certainly gives one food for thought!
Tfs, regards Jean.
