[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I'm posting this for Ron (RSK), who expressed interest in photographing hummingbirds. Please see the Forum for the detailed discussion regarding camera settings.

I was about 7 feet from this male when I shot this. It is approximately a 50% crop.

Werner,
A absolutely supurb image with outstanding detail, color and clarity plus the focus is pin sharp. I know these guys are extremely difficult to get a clean shot. Your BG bokeh is excellent.
Just Outstanding

Wow, this is simply a marvelous shot, Werner!

Great focus on the eyes of this lovely colorful hummingbird.
The sharpness and POV are excellent.
Great blurry BG which gives the needed contrast to this beauty.
Well spotted!

Have a nice weekend.

Best wishes,
Paras

Hello Werner :)

This miraculous little bird flies in direction of my flowers...we are neighbours today.
The beautiful bird in the flight in pretty colours and pretty light, the
very showy realization by You showed, I like him.

Best wishes.

Hi Werner,
I'm not sure if a thank you is proper, as you've really given me a challenge:-)Thanks for the informative notes & helpful hints on the Forum,I will be more than satisfied to capture one as good & detailed as this. Many thanks for your helpful assistance. Now I just have to wait for one to visit.
Regards
Ron

Wow! One word: Beautiful!!!

Hi, Werner -
Incredible capture! The immobile parts (head and tail) are perfectly sharp and clear. The wings are a smooth blur of frenetic motion. Wonderful catchlight in it's eye. Vibrant colored plumage against the smooth background. Well done.

Hi Werner

A striking photo (also hand held!) with the beautiful catchlight reflections off the eyes. Bravo!

Paul

Hello Werner,

O! what a great capture, beautiful detail to the end of the tail.
Feather necklace ruby wonderful, outstanding image.
Congratulations dear friend, thank you for sharing.
Have a good weekend.
Warm regards.

Yolande

Hello Werner, what a wonderful capture!
I like that the shot is solely concentrated on the hummingbird with all the delicious details.
The ruby red feathers remind me of beautiful shiny sequins!
Interesting information,7 feet away and a 50%crop, thank you.
Regards Jean.

Beautifull shot in many ways. Right exposure, good contrast, and good "natural" colors.

Some species of humming can flap their wind at unbelievable speed; 90 flaps per second. So imagine the speed of motion that wing produce in ONE flap.

Under daylight, I would not hesitate to "boosth up" my ASA to 3200. Even at that speed, you'll be happily surprise of the quality result the D7000 can produce. The main reason why sacrifice fine grain is that it will enable you to shoot now at 1/3200 of a second... At those shutter speed, you'll se a big difference between 1/800 and 1/1600. Its just mathematics and physics at this point...)))

Shooting with and shallow aperture such as 5.6 if you're close to the subject don't give you much latitude...tho in this shot...that ain't a problem, isn't it. But a smaller aperture should will help the AutoFocus mode to perform better...reducing your focusing dynamic points from 39 to 11 will give you also more autofocusing speed.

Good work....Cheers

Hi Werner, this is a teriffic catch, the colour and detail inthe feathers is amazing. I really love those dainty little feet tucked up under his belly.Fiona

Hallo Werner,

Carlos

Hi Werner,
Always nice to see a great photo and read about the technique in great detail. This how we can learn and this is what TL is about.
Now, I am sure that next to understanding the technique it is all in the eye of a good photographer to come to such a result. The sharpness on the head is great and the movement in the wings shows how fast these birds are. The lovely colored OOF BG adds a lot to the composition.
TFS,
Niek

Oh Werner, this is magnificent. The color, detail, dof, motion...everything is just spectacular. I am so envious! I have seen so few hummingbirds but I know this is so far beyond my ability to capture. Your sharpness and every aspect of the shot is just perfect! Love it. TFS, Lori

Olá Werner
For me is superb...it is impressive how you have stopped time.
Um abraço
teresa

Hi Werner,
An absolutely stunning shot with amazing clarity and focus.
Striking color and detail on the hummer; the colors are very vibrant and sharp.
I have yet to have the opportunity to even see one, let alone capture a shot nearly half as good as this! Although your settings and the forum give me an idea if I ever have the opportunity.
Awesome job! TFS,
Kurt

Bonjour Werner: Beau coup. Vous pouvez montrer de telles couleurs brillantes dans ce photographique. Je crois qu'il est trop difficile de clairement montrer un oiseau comme cela dans la plupart des cadres. Vous avez dirigé des résultats parfaits. Bien fait mon ami. Jacque

Werner,
Incredible shot of the hummingbird with amazing detail and a nice bokeh.

Craig

Wow Werner!
This is sublime! I'm now intimidated to post my shot of a ruby-throat I took in Wisconsin. Mine is a "blurr" in contrast to yours.
Michael

Bonjour Werner
I know you dislike comments that don't bring something new.My poor knowledge in technical words and english will not fit with this, but I must say that this is a wonderful result for the sharpness of the body against the bg (decreasing very cleverly towards the tail)and the sense of movement of the wings
A reference for me

Hi Werner,

A very impressive macro shot of the hummingbird. These things zip around so fast it's almost impossible to get a 1/2 decent shot of them. The neutral, o.o.f., uncluttered bg is a big plus also. Tfs!

Excellent capture! sharp details even on a 50% crop.

Nice colours and BOKEH-licious!!!! :)
