[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was another contender for last Friday's theme but I went with the more recent shot. I have decided to post this one anyway as I had been working on it in Photoshop.

These old boats are in Salen, on the Isle of Mull, where we visited a year ago. They are just by the side of the road and can be seen as you drive through the village. They make a wonderful subject for photography as each day the light is different, as well as the tides.

Firstly I processed one RAW image through Photomatrix to see the effect of the HDR. I decided not to use that image (it is posted in a workshop) but rather work on levels, contrast, saturation in Photoshop instead. I have cropped the sky as I didn't think it added anything to the shop. I think the Photoshopped image looks more natural so that is the one I chose to post, the HDR shot is slightly darker.

I would like to know which image other members prefer and if they can see much of a difference.

Hi Joy.

I know its all of a personal choice re images, both this one and the workshop have much merit each(theres a cop out) but if you want a vote, i'll choose the workshop version only by a whisker.

That aside i'll talk on this version.
You have enhanced the age of these boats well, we see the discolouration and rotten panels clearly. The shadows of the boats reflecting in the water adds much depth to the scene, the hazy landscape yonder adds to the mood and the history of the area. Cropping the sky was a good idea, all too often I tend to leave skys in and wish I hadn't.

All in all its an image i like , i like the feel and the sense of loss of these boats, an era of once was, has now gone. tfs

stv ;o))

Love the light in this shot, Joy!
Great focus and perfect POV with superb exposure and clarity on this boat.
The colors are original and DOF is excellent.
Well done!

Kind regards,
Paras

Hi Joy,
A lovely image indeed. As for the two images, they are difficult to choose from, I like the colours and the details of the boats in the HDR but the BG has become a wee bit too dark for my liking.

Hello Joy

Love the capture of the boats here...very rustic and full of study. Nice

Jimmy

Hello Joy, I definitely pick this image. The one with the filters seems unnatural to me and the other one, as you say, a little too dark. For me, this image has just the right intensity and the composition is perfect either way. Well done.

Hi Joy,

You're capturing well this dcspe by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see three old boats lying the shore, calm lake and the highland with the loose slope in behind. The light is managed well, so it's impressive in shadow/highlight of water surface. And, thick cloud covering the sky draws out an additional good atmosphere in this image.

Kind regards,
mikio

What a great find Joy,you have indeed done the subject proud.
Have you tried merging your WS image with this one, then reduce its effect & let your posted image show through about 50-60%?

Cheers

Ron
