[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was a 35mm transparency that was scanned and brought to Photoshop. As always, you always lose some detail and sharpness when you do that.

As you will see from the original in the workshop, I isolated the toreador and the bull by:
Cropping; duplicated layer, curves - bring down the oblique line down on the right past the 50% mark to really darken the photo. Then, I used the oval tool to draw an even elipse around the edge of the photo; feather 222, inverse, back to layer, add mask (this brings back some light in the center of the photo; adjust opacity for the vignette transition effect; filter sandstone effect, some color adjustment to make the sand a bit darker, and the red a bit redder; merge all layers, create a new layer - overlay choose 50% grey to bring out the shawows with a brush on the bull and toreador, and darken the edges some more; merge all layers; USM to bring out some detail in the photo. There you have the last moment. Sad, and emotional, when you consider the strength of that animal. Some photos should be able to draw out some emotion. This one brings out some for me, even after so many years. Rather an uneven battle. But aren't some wars the same?

Very emotional shot. The vignette works well in this photo. I think the textured effect lends itself well to this photo in that it almost seems more like a painting than a photo. Good job.

Just disgusting !

Sorry Richard but there is no beauty, no elegance into human stupidity. I totally disagree with the subject of this photo.

It is a very good shot I must say. One can disagree with the subject. Corrida is very special and only talks to a few people brought in this tradition since childhood (for what I think). But anyway here, the picture is excellent because it gives emotion and stresses the fact that YES, CORRIDA is about DEATH and DOMINATION. I feel pain seeing it but I also can admit the good technique you have in photograpy/PS and comp'. I'd put that one in the "decisive moments" category. Because you clicked just at the right moment, where intensity is so high we can feel it.
Cheers,
Pris.

The photo has a terrible beauty. To kill somebody (human, animal) for someone's pleasure is totally reprehensible. I have read the viewer's reactions and your response to them. They all make sense but at the same time just as nobody would post a picture of a human being being killed, this photo should not have been posted. That is just my opinion.

Animal cruelty is disgusting in whatever way you show it.

Well, the least you can say is what you say in the note, Richard: it stirs up emotion... I'm disgusted by this animal abuse and the way the Spanish propagate it as an important part of their tradition. Personally, I think we should begin inverting the situation. One of these macho puppets - unarmed, of course - in an arena with a dozen aroused bulls ;o).

Well, having said this, let's talk about the work you did on the slide. I really like it. I looked at the original version in the WS, which you really enhanced. The vignetting you created works very well - especially in the thumbnail. I'd have cropped even more from all sides, to keep the compo even, but avoiding the wall on top.
You captured this at exactly the right time. The macho looking down on his victim (I'd like to kick his ***), the pose of the poor bull for which the suffering, thank heavens, is finally coming to an end is very dramatic.
On the other hand, the compo of the original is showing that this macho is in fact well protected by two other idiots - this makes him appear to be not so brave after all ;o).

TFS.

Belle shot. Le workshop est très bon.
J,ai fait une photo de corrida à Malaga...
Je viens tout juste de la "poster" sous viceversa.

Photography many can only dream off.
Extremaly strong content shown clear and bright. That's US, people.
It's hard to take your eyes off.
George
PS: Minor...I think you shouldn't apply the sandstone texture to bull and torrero - just the sand itself( if anything).

C'est une image dur à regarder... J'adore les animaux et je ne comprends toujours pas pourquoi tant de rivalité entre l'homme et la bête... Pauvre taureau.
