Yes you can Dennis.

Using your photoshop or other software, create 2 or more additional images of your original (can be raw or jpeg). The idea is to have additional images of the original with various exposure levels.

Then using photomatix, open the original + other files created, then click on hdr or exposure balance. The latter, exposure balance, is a more refined technique of tonemapping.
