Has anyone got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 Twinkletoes Silver Star Critiquer/Gold Note Writer [C: 47 W: 8 N: 100] (649)::2008-07-18 2:26
Has anyone out there got one of these and is it recommended? Been into the camera shop this morning and this is the one the guy was keen to promote. It is really tiny and I wondered if any of you guys have one, or have used one and what you thought of it. It was priced at 300 all but a few pence. Does this sound reasonable?

Hi Karen,
On the internet a lot can be found about this camera. Postings with image examples.
Site www.pixel-peeper.com has collected a lot of pictures from all cameras, including the TZ5. Look for yourself and make up your mind.
I guess it is a very nice camera and it has HD film quality with optical zoom (!)
In the netherlands it does cost 259 euro !! Sounds a lot cheaper than your 300 pounds ....
greetings,
Joop!

Great little camera... but better prices than that can be found... 300 seems a rip of... nearer the 225 mark....and even cheaper on amazon....

Thanks guys for your replies. Since seeing it in the shop I contacted a member on here who pointed out that it didn't have a viewfinder. This was something I didn't notice when looking at the thing. That kinda put me off a bit as I do still like to look through the viewfinder than totally rely on the screen.

I also did some research on the internet and found lots of different prices. The lower price on amazon was for a different colour - sounds daft I know but the prices vary on colour so I presume thats where colour popularity comes into it!!!

What I would like though is to see something in a shop then do the internet thing to compare prices. I would not just want to buy straight from the net without seeing the actual product first. I think it is good to be able to hold it, see how it works etc etc etc.

I have just borrowed a friends Fuji Finepix S5000 so think I am steering towards a normal to bigger size camera rather than these tiny little things. Although, having said that I dont quite think I want to go to DSLR. I know the quality would be better but do I really wanna lug all the lenses etc around. Who knows, I shall still be deciding on a camera this time next year probably!!!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions on here.

Karen,
I think you will be disappointed if you are looking for a point and shoot with a viewfinder. There are not that many brands with exception to Sony, and I believe Canon that still have them. Although things may have changed in the last year. Dianne

Hi Karen,
If you're interested in a good compact that has excellent features,I can thoroughly recommend the Panasonic Lumix FZ8
I've had 3 Panasonics, the FZ2, the FZ5 (then I tried a Canon S3IS) and went back to the Lumix FZ8
Its probably comparable in price to the TZ5 but with many more features. Its great for macros and low light shooting as well as landscapes.
Really worth checking out.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Karen
I have a Panasonic FZ18, its not a point and shoot but I like it. I am still a beginner as you know so I probably cant be much help, but if you are starting to steer towards a bigger camera again then you might consider this one. 18 optical zoom, viewfinder, manual and auto focus. Some of my pics are rotten cos of me not the camera!
Give it a go if you see it in a shop.....they should maybe let you try things out.
I am a big fan of ebay shops which is where i got mine. It was new and came with various deals. I think I paid around 235 and got free extra battery, 4GB card, lens cleaning stuff etc. In the shops the camera alone was 295 at the time. Not everyone trusts ebay I know but amazon is good.
Hope you find what you are looking for
cheers

I recommend that you get a good dslr, Karen. Why? Because you'll just be wasting your money if you eventually want to go that route. If you just want a good little point and shoot, then that's fine, but you sound like you want to upgrade and you might as well start with a basic body like the Canon basic model (or Nikon if you prefer but I'm a Canon man as are all my lenses).

I think $259 Euros is roughly $500 and here that gets you basically set up for the low-end and smaller models.
