Nikon Teleconverter TC-20E II spiker26 Silver Star Critiquer/Silver Note Writer [C: 11 W: 4 N: 49] (290)::2008-08-26 0:28
I am evaluating the acquisition of a Nikon TC-20E II teleconverter to my repertoire, but noticed when surfing the net, that the converter will not work with some lenses.
I try to use the converter with a Nikkor 18-200mm VR and a Sigma 80-400mm OS lens for wildlife photography. Does anybody have first hand knowledge or experience with the use of THIS converter with either lens and can confirm or deny if they will work together. I have a Nikon D300.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Helmut.

I believe it should work with the 18-200mm VR lens as it is quite new. However, the best way to check is to go onto the Nikon Europe webside and look at "Product". From memory, I think there's a chart which shows which lenses it will / will not work with.

Regards, Paul.

Thanks for your reply Paul. I was unsuccessful to get the info from the Nikon Europe website but have surfed the net a bit more and found the info I needed. In short, NO the TC will not work with my DX lense very well and it seem to be a hit and miss experiment. Some people at forums say YES it will work, others say NO it won’t and other still say definitely 'maybe' e.g. only in manual. In general, it appears the picture quality is not that great when using a TC in any case. Cropping seems to work just as well or better.

Hi Helmut,

Sorry you've had a bit of a wild goose chase. Please try the following link:

Nikon MUST know which teleconverter is compatible with your lenses. Alternatively, you could look for an independent manufacturer. I have a TC by Kenro. It's not as good as a Nikon but, as I seldom need to use it, I don't want to tie up a lot of miney in something that sits in my bag 364 days in every year!

Hope you manage to get a definitive answer.

Regards, Paul.

Thanks for taking time out to reply Paul
I have been digging around quite a bit and learned that even Nikons own TC will not allow Nikon Zoom lenses to auto focus. The general consent seems to be that you need a f:2.8 lens to compensate for loss of light (and mine is not 2.8) and the picture quality is soft and it seems to be better to crop and enlarge. After due consideration I decided to give it a miss. Thanks anyway.
