|This is a travelogue to tell about my experience of competing in the 2008 Copenhagen 24 hour photo marathon competition.|
If you want to go directly to the CPH Photo Marathon web site to learn more you can find it at http://www.fotomarathon.dk/. There is an international photo marathon site up on www.photomarathon.eu.
For those who doesn't know what a photo marathon is I'll explain how this years event took place.
I participated in the digital competition so I don't know how the film competition worked other than that the basic 24 photos of 24 assignments in 24 hours concept was the same.
The whole thing is really quite simple. You have to take 24 photos of 24 specific assignments within 24 hours. You get 4 new assignments every 4 hours at the rendevouz point. The 24 photos have to be shot in the same order as the assignments. No pp work allowed. We were allowed to do b/w conversions in camera for those using cameras with such features.
This year was the 20th year in a row that CPH Photo Marathon took place. It started on 30th of August at 11:00am where everyone was given a sheet of paper with the first 4 assignments. Every four hours we had to be at the rendevouz point to receive the next 4 assignments. That went on through out the night until we gave in our 24 photos at 11:00am on Sunday 31st of August.
It was a tough 24 hours. I came straight from Sweeden by train where I had been with my in laws for two days. The night before the event we had a Krebse Gilde. It's a Swedish tradition where you eat lots of langustine and drink beers and akvavit. I had 4 hours of sleep the night before the event and 1 hour on the train to Copenhagen. Needless to say I was very tired.
I had borrow my friends appartment in Copenhagen so I managed to get 2 x 1 hour of sleep durin the night.
I wish I had bike which is the easiest way of getting around Copenhagen. My feed were so sore from walking nearing the end that I could hardly stand up.
My recommendations for anyone taking on this challenge in the future would be:
- Make sure you are well rested
- Have a place were you can relax if needed.
- Have some sort of transportation.
- Try to come up with a theme that spans all the assignments
- Be creative. Try to come up with different ideas than what you think others will do.
I'm happy to say that I won the award for best photo for the assignment 21. Tones in grey.
The first four assignments was:
1. The Marathon Man (Participant number must be clearly visible)
2. Sing along
3. Here is a tourist
4. On the way out into the world.
5. Community (i think the right translation is Unison or In unison)
7. My Neighborhood
9. Let your voice out
10. City life
15. Classic Photo
17. City is sleeping
18. Bent in neon
20. Writing/art on the wall
