Insomnia Part 10 - Drive

If I was suffering from Insomnia, which I’m happy I’m not, I might drive randomly around town to pass the time.

I had the camera on a tripod with it's legs fastened between the back seats, floor and oposing door. The camera was about 20 cm out the back side window.
I used a Tokina 10-17mm at it's widest focal length.

I had a Canon 430EX with a DIY light modifier made from white paper. I folded the paper into a rectangular box with a hole for the flash in one end. That way the light was thrown in almost all directions and could illuminate me with pointing directly at me.
The flash had a diffuser gel and a slight blue gel on it also. Flash power was 1/4.

I started out with an exposure of 2.5 seconds through trial and error ended up on 1 second epxosure at f/11.

For PP work I processed I converted from RAW using these settings:
Recovery = 100
Fill Light = 100
Blacks = Drag this slider to the right until photo looks balanced again
Contrast = 100
Clarity = 100
Vibrance = 100
Saturation = Start from left and drag right until desired look

I don't remember the exact settings but the above is the starting point and then make adjustment for desired result.
I also tried to correct the fish eye distortion a little bit by using lens correction and distort tool in Photoshop.

This is a great motion photo. You have given an excellent show of dedication and devotion of perfection in your display. I like this style and the originality of the capture is marvellous. I give my credit to your f11 aperture for it gives a best perimeter of the depth of field. Thanks for sharing.

Oh man, you are the king! You get an award for this! Just amazing that you would hang your camera out the window, I don't care if it was only 20cm! You have got to be the most creative dude on the site. I must say your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car! B-).....
The motion of the lights, with you and the car sharp is just amazing. And the reflection in the side mirror is just perfect! (I'm gushing)...
B-)

Excellent use of light Jens... Cleverly planned and carried out - I agree with Linda on the award ;)

Cheers

I just love that photo is amazing!

Hi Jens, your Insomnia series has been SO interesting! Although I can't comment on the technical aspects, I would say that your ingenuity, creativity, and imagination are second to none on this site.
This shot - wow! I can't believe the lengths you've gone to, not overlooking any details ... for example your reflection captured in the side mirror. Perfect! Great job. If you have any Insomnia ideas left in you, keep 'em coming!

Hello Jens,
This is a very clever and unique - but then the said could be said for many of the photos in your portfolio.
Excellent motion blur in the lights.
The reflection in the wing mirror rounds off this composition nicely.
Best regards,
Andrew

Bonjour Jens.

Au plaisir!
