Istanbul ...what a town !

Here we have the third and last country our Cruisse-ship *sailed* to: Turkey and one of its major
Cities: Istanbul.
( in history also known as: Constantinopel )

Istanbul is partley Europe and the other half is 'Asia'

There is so much to do/see that it would go to far now
to discribe it all.. but I concentrate here on the world famous: Aya Sofia

Hagia Sophia in Greek, Sancta Sophia in Latin, Aya Sofya in Turkish.

It was first built in 325 - 360 by Konstantin II before it was destroyed by fire, rebuilt, again in 532 destroyed by fire.

After ca. 32 days rebuilding was started and on 537 AD the Emperor declared it open again for Christianity.
(This was the greatest church in Christianity until St. Peter's was built in Rome 1'000 years later).

1453 Constantinopel was taken by the Ottomans and from then on the Ayasofya was a Mosque.
I cannot simply explain how overwhelming this monument is. You have to see it yourself!

Thanks for popping in Folks

Hoi John,
Indeed, Istanbul is good enough to spent more time. We spent a full week overthere (12 years ago) and could even spent more time. So much to see and so much to do.
Good capture of this building. The fontains look like waterfalls. Good clearity, colors and sharpness.

....and the technical immensity of the dome is still an architectural marvel to this day! To truly appreciate such a structure, we have to realize that there were no engineering drawings and computer calculated models available then....
Nicely put together, and if there wasn't a palm frond in the upper right, you would have had to clone one in to give it the depth it attained.
Cheers
